Since seeing the great work from Nervous System several years ago I have been interested in trying my hand at generative design. I decided to try Grasshopper (a plugin for Rhino) before some of the other alternatives and found the toolkit dense but surprisingly intuitive. This is an experiment to learn how to draw basic lines, planes, and shapes in relation to each other.
As I become more familiar with 3D modeling and rendering packages, the magical aspect of this is in combining a controlled model with a rule set, much like I enjoy with the Solidworks relationship definitions, but these rules allow for greater play within the system. Watching the tower of lines and planes twist and come to life feels more sculptural than most other modeling.
I'm eager to explore this more and try to set up my own conditions and patterns with an interface that allows for user input, although this is a little beyond where I am now. One design project has been sitting on the back burner for some time now that I'd like to move on as soon as I'm more comfortable with this set of tools.
What else should I be consuming in the field of generative design and parametric modeling?
